Employers must have a W-4 on file for each employee. This form enables the employee to provide their name, social security number, marital status and current address. This form also provides the option for certain employees who qualify to be exempted from state and federal withholding taxes.

The I-9 form provides the Internal Revenue Service proof that the employee is legally able to work in the United States. This form proves that the employee has furnished adequate documentation to the employer to establish their right to work in the United States. Acceptable documents include a Social Security Card, Birth Certificate, United States Passport, Permanent Resident Card, as well other forms of identification listed on the IRS web site.
